"This whole new law of PIP is a pain in the a**!!!!! Underwriters are behind in processing and because of this, my insurance bill is higher than normal, my insurance was almost cancelled… yada yada … needless to say, I was LIVID!!!!! "In February of this year, I purchased a home, and was required to have a homeowners policy to close on the home. At this point I had already had an auto insurance and renters policy with State Farm through this office for about 6 or 7 months. I spoke with my agent who took some information from me and sent me a self-serve home inspection website link which I promptly completed. I was paying my homeowners insurance through my escrow each month with my mortgage, and my auto policy through the State Farm app each month. I would frequently get texts from State Farm and app notifications whenever my auto insurance bill was coming up, or was due, or if documents were needed from me and at no point was I ever contacted by a State Farm agent. In July of 2024, I received an email from State Farm notifying me that I had not cashed a refund check that was sent to my home address. Now, this email I received said that the check was sent to my home, but I had not received it. It did not say anything about what was being refunded, but I had assumed it was related to PIP on my auto policy. I requested a duplicate check be sent out, and the one they emailed me about was voided. Well, come to find out the refund was for the remainder of my homeowners policy, which had been cancelled in May! The letter stated that based on an inspection performed, my home owners policy was cancelled due to "a severely deteriorated roof, and excessive debris in the yard". Keep in mind, State Farm did not contact me, no inspector contacted me, and my mortgage company did not notify me of any cancellation. I discovered this on a Saturday, so the following Monday, I first called my Escrow, who informed me that as far as they could tell, my State Farm policy was still in effect. I called this office, and spoke with an agent who I will refer to as "M". M looked into the matter, and saw that yes, my policy was cancelled in May, and a letter had been sent out with the check in April, but the letter and the check was sent to the wrong address, an address that was at no point ever associated with the homeowners policy. I immediately asked to see the photos of this "inspection" and M said he would reach out to underwriting to obtain them. Less than an hour later, M calls me back and informs me that decision was made based on satellite photographs from BEFORE I OWNED THE HOME, shortly after a major storm. The "roof" in question was the garage that was, before I owned the home, separate from the house, and had to be torn down due to the storm damage, meaning that my policy was cancelled based on an image of a structure that DID NOT EXIST WHILE I OWNED THIS HOME OR HELD THIS POLICY. The debris was what I assume would have been form the storm. I was livid. I had a 39 lapse in coverage and not one person from this agency reached out to me. I inquired with M about this and his answer was essentially "The guy who should've done that was fired, and we've been behind". M apologized for the inconvenience and got a new policy started for me. It took a couple of weeks but once it was ready, my policy was now almost 300 dollars more a year, for over $50,000 LESS coverage. I asked M about this, and he informed me that the 39 day lapse was part of the reason the rate increased. I explained that there was no way that was on me, because they failed to communicate to me that the policy was being cancelled. The letter sent in April stated that if I disagreed, it could be looked at, and had I actually received this letter, I believe the decision would have been reversed, but that was not the case. M then went on to say that they were behind and that they were still getting people caught up. I spoke with a lawyer specializing in insurance negligence, who informed me that since no claim was made, or denied I did not have a case for negligence, but it might be worth submitting a complaint to DFIS which I have not yet done, but I have switched policies and carriers entirely. If your going to cancel my policy, at least use an up to date image."
